Our Story & How to Use

Our Story:

In 1989, while visiting Parque del Cóndor in Ecuador's Andes, Al Crancer, Jr. had a fortunate encounter that planted the seed for an innovative mobility solution. Spotting a fallen tree limb perfectly shaped for use as a walking cane, he stepped on it by chance—causing the branch to spring upright right into his hand. This simple, natural self-righting action revealed a key advantage: easy retrieval without the need to bend or strain. That moment sparked the fundamental idea behind what would eventually become the PopUp Cane—a purpose-built device designed to eliminate the all-too-common hassle of picking up a dropped cane for people with mobility limitations.

Years later, as Al increasingly depended on a cane for balance and support in daily life, the drawbacks of standard canes grew impossible to ignore. They fell often, and retrieving them demanded awkward bending that caused discomfort and risk—not just for him, but for countless others facing similar challenges. Motivated by these real-world frustrations and still holding onto the original 1989 limb that had inspired him, Al preserved it after returning to California as a tangible reminder of the potential solution.

In 2017, he joined forces with his son, Alan Crancer, to bring the vision to life. Together, they transformed that early, rudimentary concept into a refined, user-centered prototype—carefully engineering features that prioritize ease, safety, and independence.

The PopUp Cane delivers a smart, streamlined answer to a widespread issue in the world of assistive devices. By enabling effortless, no-bend retrieval, it boosts user autonomy, cuts down on fall risks during pickup, and promotes greater confidence in everyday movement. This endeavor beautifully illustrates the timeless power of creative problem-solving: turning a single observant moment in nature into a practical, market-ready product with the potential to enhance quality of life for millions of people worldwide living with mobility impairments.

Key Features

  • Sturdy yet lightweight build provides dependable balance and support while walking. Adjustable height options ensure a custom fit.

  • Ergonomic, comfortable grip supports prolonged use; its curved shape also integrates into the self-righting mechanism.

  • Foot-activated leverage protrusion near the handle lets you step on it to tilt the cane back upright—no bending required.

  • Built-in stabilizers keep the cane steady and secure during the righting process, reducing any chance of slipping.

  • Durable rubber tip delivers excellent traction across different surfaces.

  • Sleek, compact design makes it easy to store or travel with.

How to Use

Use the cane normally for support while walking—the shaft delivers reliable assistance on flat or uneven ground.

To right a fallen cane:

  1. Position the cane so the leverage protrusion (near the handle) is within reach.

  2. While standing, place your foot on the protrusion and apply gentle downward pressure.

  3. The cane will smoothly tilt upright, allowing you to easily grab the handle without stooping.

  4. Integrated stabilizers maintain balance throughout the motion.

Store it upright or flat—the thoughtful design prevents rolling.

Benefits

  • Effortlessly retrieve your cane with just your foot—perfect for anyone with back pain, arthritis, limited flexibility, or reduced mobility.

  • Lowers fall risk when bending to pick up a dropped cane.

  • Straightforward, mechanical design needs no batteries or complicated assembly.

  • Crafted from premium, long-lasting materials built for everyday reliability.

Care and Maintenance

  • Clean with a damp cloth; do not submerge in water.

  • Check the tip periodically and replace it if it shows significant wear.

  • Store in a dry location, away from extreme heat or cold.
